- When your brain is affected by depression, your body suffers too. In fact, in primary care clinics, two-thirds of patients only complain of vague body aches and pains, not realizing that they're suffering from depression. I once treated a recent college graduate named Lily, who felt tired and listless at work, and she also had backache and joint pain. The last thing on her mind was that she might be depressed, but she was.
