- The poet John O'Donohue said, "every time you enter into a conversation "with another human being, "you're entering halfway into the conversation "they're already having with themselves." Other people's minds are already in motion. To sync up with them, you need to do certain things that signal you're in stride. What things? I'll share with you a great summary of the seven key steps for communication that connects us with others. It comes from Dr. Helen Riess, of Harvard Medial School, who focuses on the neuroscience of emotions, and how to relate with people across differences and situations. I strongly recommend her book, The Empathy Effect. She uses the word empathy as an acronym, to summarize the seven key steps. But you'll notice, it's more than just understanding how other's feel, it's how to communicate to connect. E stands for eye contact.
