- These days information technology plays a critical role in every part of a business. And the supply chain is no exception. We need IT professionals who know how to write code, design interfaces and protect data. To show how IT skills can be useful, let's walk through some of the systems that are used in virtually every supply chain starting with transportation management systems. TMSes are used to track and manage products as they're being shipped from one place to another. They can track the carriers, the modes of transportation, the prices and a lot more. A single facility might even have two TMSes. One for materials coming in from your suppliers, your inbound TMS, and another for the products shipped to your customers, your outbound TMS.
