- Okay, it's time to step on stage. To maximize impact, let's think briefly about a few do's and don'ts. Let's actually start with the don'ts. Be sure to avoid these behaviors. First, reading slides. Don't do it. They're a guide for the audience, not you. If you indulge in more than one quick glance, you're reading. If you're prepared, you don't read slides, you just talk to the audience. Next is apologizing for errors. Never. If you forget something or misspoke and you're sure you need to include it or fix it, okay, do it. But don't apologize. Just say, let me also say. Or to restate that idea, I would say. Don't apologize, just add what needs to be added and people won't even know that you've made a mistake. Another no-no. Mismanaging your time on stage. Two big issues here. First, don't ask someone how much time you have left. You should know how long they want you to speak.
