- Managers and leaders are in a challenging spot. Working every day with age-diverse teams and reports is far from a one-size-fits-all proposition. What works for one person or their team might not work across the board. With that said, here are three best practices managers can use to set a constructive tone as well as to acknowledge, address, and motivate their teams from an age-neutral perspective. Language and verbal behavior. Language is a powerful reflection of one's point of view whether unconscious or intentional. Bringing unwanted or unnecessary attention to age sends the message that a person's age is a reason for a manager's decision or for a person's success or failure. Casual or seemingly lighthearted references can actually perpetuate old biases such as referencing someone's age in connection with their skillset or experience or when qualifying performance, as in you did great for someone your age.
