- 72% of LinkedIn survey respondents listed one-on-one time with their direct manager as the most important part of any pre-boarding or onboarding process. I recommend having career conversations at least twice a year outside of when you typically do more formal performance reviews. That way, there's no pressure. Somebody is not sitting in front of you nervous, wondering about their bonus or their performance. They're in an open-minded and curious state. Remember, career conversations are not about solving problems, giving advice, or having all the answers, all of which are common default modes for managers. Sometimes, as soon as we hear that someone's feeling a little stuck, maybe they're at a plateau or a pivot point, or there's something they're really excited about, we want to jump in and start problem solving or giving advice.
