- Have you ever heard the phrase, garbage in, garbage out? It means that your results are only as good as the data you used to generate them. So always consider the reliability and validity of your source. Validity refers to how well a tool used measures what it's supposed to measure. Reliability refers to how consistent results are over time. For example, if a person is interviewing to be an accountant, a preemployment test that reviews basic accounting principles will help you determine if they are right for the job. The test is valid because we're testing for needed skills. What makes the test reliable is when the next six people who take it who have similar backgrounds and experiences get a similar score. Another statistical principle is sampling. Sampling is taking a smaller representative group of data from a larger population to use for analysis.
