- People react to change much like they react to grief or loss. In large part, because a big part of people's issue with change can be a sense of loss. This could be concerned about a loss of relationships, loss of status, clarity in their jobs, security, a loss in a sense of competency, relationships, traction or loss in territory. So it makes sense the model that describes grief would also align with the way people generally react to change. This can help you know what to expect with change initiatives and thus plan better. The model that I use most often is based on the work by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross and says that people go through four general phases when faced with change. Phase one is status quo. So this is pre-change, but when change has already been decided on. What you can expect to see is things like shock and denial.
