- [Instructor] Here are some strategies that have helped me over time to find my own voice and to speak up. The first is to review the agenda ahead of time and commit to speaking about one topic. This is exactly what I did when I was working at Ernst & Young, and I find that, when you can actually take the time to prepare and know what you're going to say, it just gives you so much more confidence. The second is don't wait for an opening. I was recently at a board meeting where a person, actually somebody who I have a great deal of respect for, had the floor, and he wouldn't let anybody get a word in edgewise, so I finally decided to stand. And by standing, it forced everyone to look at me, and it gave me my opening to speak. So really think about, also, your nonverbal cues, your posture, your eye contact, and even standing when appropriate. The third strategy is developing a list of stock phrases that will help you insert yourself into a conversation. So phrases like, "Building on…
