Sharing the future through stories
- One of the most moving ways to talk about the future is to share your own story. As cultural anthropologist Mary Catherine Bateson once said, "Our species thinks in metaphors, "and learns through stories." Too often in business, we place rational or intellectual arguments above emotional ones, and yet it's the emotions that make data points more compelling. This is how we know when we're excited about something or conversely, if we're fearful of it. To make your personal story more compelling, include a beginning, middle, and end, strong characters, active conflict, and vivid details. The most memorable stories manage to connect our hearts and our head. If your story about the future is personal, credible, and specific, it will do just that.
