Join Nick Brazzi for an in-depth discussion in this video Setting up an Apple ID or iCloud account, part of Up and Running with Apple TV.
- In a previous movie, I explained what the Apple ID and iCloud accounts are and what you can use them for. In this movie, I want to talk about how you can set up a new account if you don't already have one. So, you cannot create a new Apple ID on the Apple TV itself. So, you will need to work on a computer to set up the account. And there are a few ways to set up a new account, but they don't all work the same. You could go to appleid.apple.com, and set up an account here. But I don't like to do this because after you set up your account, you're not able to add your credit card information here.
Now, another way to go would be to set up your account in iTunes. Obviously, if you set up an Apple ID in iTunes, it can be used for the iTunes store. But that account can also be used for iCloud as well. Wherever you're prompted to log in to iCloud, you could use that same account. So, to set up an account in iTunes, you just need a Mac or Windows computer with iTunes installed. Then go to the Store menu, and go to Create Apple ID. And from here, you'll just follow through the prompts to go through the process of setting up the account.
You'll want to hit Continue. Then you'll read through the Terms and Conditions, and agree to the Terms and Conditions. And then you get to this screen where you plug in information about your account, your email address, password and a bunch of other information. So, this is a really great way to go, but there's one small catch here. And it might not be an issue for you. The very first thing that you'll need to provide is an email address which will be your login username. If you set up your new account inside of iTunes, you'll have to provide an existing email address that you already have as your username.
But take a look at this. Here on my Mac, I'm going to go into the System menu, to System Preferences. Then to iCloud, and since I'm not already logged into iCloud on this computer, I have the opportunity to create an Apple ID here. So, this is another place you can go to to create an Apple ID. So, I'll click on that, and the process is fairly similar. First, I'm going to plug in my location which is the United States, then I'll plug in my birthday. Then I'll hit Next, and then I'm going through the process of setting up the account.
It looks a little bit different, but I'm going through the same things. But if you set up a new account here inside of the iCloud interface, you can choose to use an existing email address like we saw over in iTunes or you can set it to create a new iCloud email address. It'll be whatever name you choose @iCloud.com. So, if you prefer to use the free iCloud email account, then this is where you should go to create your new account. From here, whichever place you go, the process is going to be pretty similar.
You'll just go through the prompts to set up your account. Now, I already have an account, so for now, I'm just going to take a step back, and I'm going to cancel this. And I'll just sign in with the account that I already have. So, I'm going to sign in here in the iCloud interface. And you'll go through some initial setup for logging in with your iCloud account on your computer. And there's more information about this in the iCloud essential training course. I'll go ahead and hit Next.
And I'll just go through these prompts. Because I just want you to see, after you've logged into your iCloud account on a computer, you can go into account details over here on the right. You can go to the payment tab, and this is where you can go to add or modify your credit card information. I'm going to hit done on this, and I'm going to quit System Preferences. Now, if you decide that you don't want to use iCloud at all, and you'd rather do all of this inside of iTunes, you can do that as well. For now, what I'm going to do is just cancel this process of creating a new account, and just like I did a moment ago, I already have an account so I'm going to sign in.
So, I'll go into the Store menu. I'll hit Sign In, and again I'll sign in with that same account. Once you're signed into an account in iTunes, you can click on this account button near the top right. You can go to Account Info. You'll need to confirm your password. Hit View Account. And from here, you can go to the Payment Options. I see this line that says Payment Type, and I can hit Edit, and that's where you can go to add or change your credit card information.
And there you go. Now, you should be able to get your Apple ID all set up and ready to go, and you should be able to link your credit card information to it. So, then when you set up your Apple TV, all you need to do is sign into that account. Just keep track of the email address and password for this account. That's what you'll need to log in.

Q: This course was updated on 04/14/2016. What changed?
A: we updated four tutorials to cover changes to bluetooth keyboards and devices, Siri, photo viewing, and new interface features in the Apple TV OS (v9.2). Nick also recorded one new video, "Using voice dictation to input text," which shows how to use Siri remote to make it easier to type and search.
