- Some people want to see you fail. They also want everyone else to see you fail too. They do this because they believe if you fall behind, they get ahead. A common way for them to do this is create a great visibility opportunity where you can fail. They can encourage you to share something they know will be unpopular. They might share information they know is wrong to make you look bad in a particular situation. They might even put you in the spotlight before you're ready to share your ideas. They may ask you to lead a project they know is doomed to fail, they may encourage you to take over a team they know it's going to be disbanded or let go. It seems like they're doing you a favor in that moment, but what they're really doing is setting you up to fail. When someone who traditionally has been an opponent creates a great opportunity, question their motivation, seek to fully understand the situation before you say yes.
