- Back in the day, my father worked at the phone company. He had a desk job, which is an old fashioned way of saying that he sat in a cubicle and he earned a paycheck to support our family. Whenever my dad needed a break he'd go to the kitchen for some coffee. There was a refrigerator, a microwave, and a water cooler. That's where he would hear the company gossip rumor and innuendo. No surprise here. The water cooler gossip was always wrong. No matter the ridiculous scenario my dad would hear some far-fetch story and get worked up for days. It was all he could think about at work and at home. Instead of leaving work at work and having fun with his family and friends, he just brought all that anxiety home with him. Now that I've worked in human resources for over 25 years, I wish I can go back in time and tell my dad to get that cup of coffee and get back to his desk.
