- Systems thinking. The ability to see problems through a series of connected relationships is an invaluable futurist skill. Seeing the world through systems allows you to see episodic incidents as part of a larger connected whole, while also identifying potential root causes or underlying factors. As a futurist, you need the ability to separate signals from the noise in order to better identify important patterns and influences. One method to understand this thinking is through the iceberg model. We know an iceberg only shows a small percentage, roughly 10% of its full mass above water with the vast majority submerged. But that 90% underneath can cause oceanic currents to change, ultimately impacting the top. And since the top is visible, that's what we see and often react to, not the underlying causes.
