SHRM-CP exam: Content outline

- We're going to take a different approach to certification prep with this course. I'll recommend articles to broaden your knowledge. We'll explore specific concepts through the use of scenarios, and I'll provide links to free resources you can use to familiarize yourself with U.S. laws and regulations that impact the HR practice. You're encouraged to download the exercise files, including the study plan that you can modify to fit your lifestyle and preferences. The SHRM-CP exam covers the topics in the SHRM Body of Competency and Knowledge, the SHRM-BoCK, which divides the human resource practice into technical and behavioral competencies. Technical competencies can be described as the what, or the knowledge HR practitioners need to have to do their job well. Behavioral competencies describe how the job is done and help HR pros navigate the workplace with a strategic mindset, moving HR pros from simply being order takers to influencers. The technical competencies, half of the exam, covers 15 functional areas, separated into three knowledge domains, people, organization, and workplace. The other half is made up of eight behavioral competencies, grouped into leadership, interpersonal, and business. The SHRM-CP exam is a total of 190 questions, 160 are scored. 30 questions are actually being tested for possible inclusion on future exams, but are not a part of your overall score. You won't know which ones they are, so treat every question with the same level of thought. The questions for each competency area are divided into two types, knowledge and situational. Knowledge questions test your understanding of HR concepts and are broken down into two categories. The first are referred to as foundational knowledge items and cover the eight behavioral competencies. The second type are HR specific knowledge items and come from the 15 functional areas. Situational judgment items are work-related scenarios to measure your ability to apply your knowledge and make decisions. Each scenario is followed by several questions and you must choose the best possible answer. Be careful here. Many of the answers are good answers and will resolve the problem, but they're not the best possible answer. Download the question types from the exercise files for more details. The SHRM learning system is one of the main resources available for prepping for the exam and can be purchased from the SHRM website. However, I recommend that you don't rely on any one source for preparation. Because the SHRM-CP is mainly a test of how to apply your HR knowledge to real-life situations and generally accepted HR best practice, it's important to gather as many perspectives as you can on the right approach to resolve an issue. I also encourage you to take as many full-length practice exams as possible and give yourself enough time to study, leveraging resources available to you through SHRM and other HR course content on LinkedIn Learning, like Human Resource Foundations and Strategic Human Resources. Now, let's get started on your certification journey.
