Respectful candor

- When it came to delivering a tough message, the late Winston Churchill, former Prime Minister of Great Britain, addressed the topic of tact. He said, tact is the ability to tell someone to go to hell, in such a way that they look forward to the trip. When you can share a tough message in such way that it's received and acted upon, you'll know you're communicating respectfully with tact. In addition to tact, candor is necessary. Candid people possess the qualities of openness and honesty. To create a thriving coaching culture, you have to have candid conversations. Without candor, difficult conversations won't occur or will be so watered down that they don't lead to the change that's necessary. But make no mistake about it, candor is not an excuse for being condescending, belittling or demeaning to others. Let me be very blunt, being candid isn't covering for being insensitive or mean.
