- I've asked hundreds of people what it takes to be a great manager, and micromanagement has never been on that list. And yet everyone knows what micromanagement is and has experienced it. If we don't want it but it's happening, we need to know how to resist the urge to do it. Let's start with two important facts. First, micromanagement is in the eye of the beholder. You can manage two people exactly the same way and while one will appreciate your input and help, the other will feel stifled and micromanaged. This means that we must be more flexible in our approach and understand the needs of individuals, and remember that micromanagement is in the eye of the beholder, which isn't us. Second, some people aren't meeting the needed performance standards. Sometimes managers justify their micromanaging tendencies because people aren't doing their job.
