Relationships are everything!

- Relationships are everything. I think particularly in communications, that's your brand, right? It's all about, can you, you have to communicate you talk to people. But that's what has kept me at the company for so long are those relationships and the people who I enjoy spending time with. I mentioned after I left Oxygen, I came to MTV networks and I worked in corporate communications with Carol Robinson and Judy McGrath and Tom Freston and what I learned there was that's how you get things done is by having conversations. So I've never been one to solve problems over email or anything like, I'll get up. And I saw the power of, I remember Tom Preston were like, come walk down to, Carol's office and we're going to have a conversation about whatever it is. And when you have those conversations, you're building relationships, someone's getting them to know about your values. They're getting to know about your principles. They're getting to know if you're funny, they are getting to know, you know, if you, if you're smart, they're getting to know if they just like you. And then if all of those things, then you start to build a relationship. It's hard to build a relationship on email. It's really hard. So those connections have really lasted me through the whole time I've been there. So Bob Bakish, who is now the head of our company, when he worked with, when we went to, when Tom Preston was running Viacom, Bob was his you know number two so you know, we kind of always joke. It's like, remember when, you know, we were on the floor and we all kind of we're up here together. But that's where our relationship started, like all the way back then in 2007, at that time, and you know, having those meetings and when we all the different deals that were happening at that time, and that's when you just start to develop those relationships and that's how people remember you, even if you do end up not working with them from a day to day basis, but then you can just pick it right back up because here I am now in meetings with Bob about whatever, you know, we kind of just pick up where we left off because that's also the culture of the company is that way. But relationships are everything. And in the end, coming to MTV networks, I got there through a relationship with a woman who I worked with at Robinson Layer and we worked very closely together. And you know, she kind of just because we worked so closely together, Lauren Horwitz, she said, well, you know, I think you'd be quite for this job. And then Lauren refers me to Carol and talking with Carol, Carol's like, I think this would be great for you and we developed a relationship. We go upstairs to Viacom corporate, and right before Tom left, I started with developing a relationship with Debra Lee. And when that shift happened, she was like, well, why don't you come over and work with me? And you know, it's all from one relationship to the next and being consistent in your presentation and open and just ready to learn.
