When your brain is flooded with the stress hormone cortisol at a faster rate than it can release, it can kill brain cells and even reduce the overall size of the brain. It especially impacts the prefrontal cortex, the area of the brain responsible for memory and learning, which can lead to brain fog and forgetfulness. It can also increase the size of the amygdala, which actually makes your brain more receptive to stress. In other words, chronic stress can actually result in a brain that's predisposed to more stress.
