- When you're leading from the middle of an organization, your ability to influence your peers is critical. If I used Facebook lingo to describe your relationship status, I'd say, "It's complicated." On the one hand, you and your peers are equals on the org chart, so you have no direct authority over them. On the other, your peers do things that directly impact your bottom line but don't measurably impact how your peers are being evaluated. When that's the case, you'll need to rely on other strategies to influence them. Try to find ways to build mutually beneficial relationships. Sure, you're technically on the same team in the sense that you work for the same company, but you're running different parts of the company, and their needs might not align with yours.
