- Do you ever think about what makes you a successful business analyst? Well, it's a lot of stuff really. But let's focus on a big factor in your success that isn't explicitly tested on a CBAP exam. Competencies. Competencies are the behaviors, characteristics, knowledge, and personal qualities that effect how a person performs business analysis work. I know, a lot of these are not unique to business analysis but they matter. Each of these can directly impact your business analysis success. These fundamental skills are grouped into six categories. Analytical Thinking and Problem Solving, Behavioral Characteristics, Business Knowledge, Communication Skills, Interaction Skills, and Tools and Technology.
