- If there's an employee or colleague in your life who experiences a lot of conflict, pay attention to their language. I almost guarantee you will hear a lot of what I call irresponsible language. Once you learn how to identify this kind of language, you can quickly course correct others to a more focused and productive outcome. Let's start by looking at the four types of irresponsible language, since it's a core behavior of someone who stirs up high conflict. Then we'll review how to shift the language from irresponsible to responsible. The first type is blame. Blame can be as big as avoiding responsibility for a major mistake, or as small as blaming traffic or the weather if you're late for work. A second type of irresponsible language is excuses. Excuse-making is a second cousin to blame. When you use excuses, you are in effect saying, "This happened to me but I didn't really have any choices." For example, "I would…
