- Now that you've negotiated your way to yes, you're going to want to recap your understanding of the agreement. So, before you leave the meeting, take a moment to verbally summarize all the major points of your conversation and any followup that might be necessary. I also recommend sending an email, and I have a few tips to help you write it. Open with appreciation and thanks; it's simply the right thing to do. Then write a quick bullet point list of your major deal points. Also include timelines and deadlines you may have agreed to. Now, next, list any accountabilities, like gathering data that your boss needs to carry forward your agreement to, say HR. And, finally, close with your genuine excitement about the year ahead. If, for whatever reason, your agreement is contingent on getting approval from another person or department, acknowledge that in your email, too, and be prepared for a second conversation with your boss.
