- All organizations have a chain of command. That's the formal control structure that specifies that this person is in charge of this area of the business, that this person reports to this manager, and so on. Generally, it's wise to stay within the chain of command. That means if you need assistance from a level above your position, you go to your immediate supervisor, not their boss or some other manager. However, it does happen. For example, it might just be that you aren't accessible. You're not in the office or answering calls, etc. No matter the reason, this can cause a problem. Maybe a client needs a quick answer or a key vendor needs someone to sign off on something, something that you typically handle. To play it safe, your employee might go to your boss.
