Psychological safety: A daily practice

- Leaders create a culture of psychological safety through three basic categories of action. The first is, I call it setting the stage. It's a combination of purpose and reminding people of why what we do matters, which engages and energizes, and emphasizing the complexity and uncertainty of the work that lies ahead. Emphasizing that complexity lets people know that you know it's okay to make mistakes, it's okay to have some things go wrong, it's okay to encounter problems. That's the nature of the work we do. It's not going to be perfect every time, and so, it's creating this rationale for speaking up. The second thing that leaders must do to create psychological safety is invite participation proactively.
