- Many people imagine there must be a trade-off between psychological safety and accountability. Let's define accountability as holding people to high standards, you know, really setting ambitious goals and expecting people to do their very best. Many people think you can't have that and psychological safety. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, a leader's job is both. Leaders are responsible for creating an environment of psychological safety where people can learn and innovate and collaborate and do great work. They're also responsible, as you well know, for inspiring and setting high standards of accountability. If you don't do either one of those jobs well, then you've got people in what I call the apathy zone. This is where they quit and stay.
