- In order to coach effectively it's critical that you understand people's view of work as well as their professional and personal goals. The more you can connect your coaching to the whole person, professional success and personal happiness, the more engaged they'll be in the coaching process. A great example of this comes from the movie The Karate Kid. Once young Daniel understood why Mr. Miyagi had him performing certain tasks, like waxing a car, those tasks took on a whole new meaning.
