Process and creativity
- Have you ever heard the phrase, "We're just paving the cow paths"? It comes from our past, when farmers allowed their cow herds to choose the best way back to the barn, creating paths in the fields. Then, we just paved over those paths to create roads. That explains why cities like Boston are a logic-defying maze, instead of a grid. It can be like that in our organizational lives too. We develop processes and systems at one point in time, and then we use new approaches or technology to just make things faster, when we could be reinventing the whole approach. Our way of doing things can constrain our thinking and blind us to creative ways of operating, even opportunities to use old ideas in new ways.
