- So you've crafted a few goals, great, but will they be motivational? Sure, a challenging goal in and of itself can be motivating but there's more to it. You're not supposed to define a goal, hand it off and then tell the employee to get to work. That's just a transaction. Strong leaders focus on nurturing relationships. So I'm going to show you how to really drive productivity by collaborating with your employees to jointly establish their goals. Now, I'm not naive. You're the boss and ultimately what you say goes but to the extent you can, you want to be a partner and collaborator, not a distant boss who occasionally hands out goals. When you choose to collaborate, you help your employee feel a sense of purpose because through your conversations, they become more aware of how their goals help the organization.
