- When people hear the word mindfulness they immediately think of sitting in a meditation position with their eyes closed. Although mindfulness does have it's roots in Eastern religious traditions there's scientific evidence that it can change your genes and your brain and help with depression too. Just know, you don't have to belong to a particular religion to practice mindfulness. So let's talk about why mindfulness is helpful, how to practice it and some therapies that incorporate it. To start, mindfulness is a way of observing your negative thoughts and feelings without becoming overwhelmed by them. When you do you distance yourself from them. When you practice mindfulness you do two things. First you place your attention on your breath and then you deliberately but not forcibly ignore whatever mental chatter there is inside your head. Often it helps if your eyes are closed. If you start to pay attention to your mental chatter gently redirect your attention back to your breath…
