- I recently had the opportunity to practice all three aspects of self-compassion. And it was triggered by an email I received from someone who had attended a lecture I gave at a small liberal arts college. First, let me give you some background. Whenever I give a talk, I go through this ritual where I imagine who's going to be in the audience. And I imagine who in that room might be suffering the most. And I try to imagine what they might need to hear in this moment. And I think about using this as an opportunity to speak for them and to them. And for this particular talk which was to undergraduates and the local community. I was thinking about a student of mine who had committed suicide my first year of teaching at Stanford.
