Policy: Implementing a healthy workplace policy
- You may already have an anti-bullying policy, and you definitely have an anti-harassment policy. While these policies are all about what's prohibited, how about a policy about what's expected, or a Healthy Workplace Policy? So here's how you create it. First, at your next staff meeting, break attendees into groups of four, and give them 15 minutes to answer this single question. How would you like to be treated by your peers and managers? If your company is too large or spread out to do company-wide meetings, you can always pass this exercise along to the department heads, and let them run the exercise in their own teams. After 15 minutes, ask each group to share their answers. As they call them out, type them out onto a document projected onto a screen, so that everyone can see what everyone else said. Remarkably, most groups will give about the same 15 answers or so. Employees will realize that they want to be treated the same way as everyone else they work with. And now you have…
