- Every time you start a new book, short story or even a writing exercise, you as the writer have an important decision to make, how will you be conveying your character's experience? This decision will inform the POV of your story. POV stands for point of view, and there are three main POVs that are most often used in fiction: first, close third, and omniscient third. We won't get into the nitty-gritty of all the facets of POV because I know you're anxious to dive into the tools and get writing, but your POV decision will definitely inform how you use these tools, so I want to talk about it quickly before we move on.
