Plan for resistance

- Humans are creatures of habit. We really don't like change, and when change is suggested, we will resist it to varying degrees. As a project manager you will need to learn to recognize resistance, and have a strategy in place to deal with it so that it doesn't negatively impact your project. First of all, we're going to look at what types of resistance to look out for, and see how to deal with them. I like to broadly classify resistance in one of the following three categories. The first is job or skills related resistance. For example, someone is concerned about having to learn new skills and consequently resists the change to delay using the new deliverables. The next is the status or personal resistance. This is when a stakeholder who has previously experienced a similar change done badly, may feel anxious this change will be the same and uses this as an excuse to resist.
