- I once heard of a business that offered a cash reward to any team member that alerted the rest of the group to any delays, shortfalls, complications, or setbacks. I thought this was brilliant. So often, people will try to hide problems until it's too late. If you don't know something's a problem, you can't fix the problem, so encouraging free and open communication and acknowledging that sometimes schedules go off. Sometimes things don't work the way we've planned. That's not a problem. The problem is lack of communication around the fact that the schedule's gotten all snarled up. So encourage your team to be realistic about their timeframes and hyper-communicative about meeting their deadlines or not meeting their deadlines.
