From the course: Guy Kawasaki on How to Rock Social Media

Pinterest tips

- This section is about Pinterest. So first let me start with a little story about Pinterest. I was at a social media conference, I was moderating a panel, and I asked the audience, if you wanted to learn how to roast a turkey, would you go to Google or would you go to Pinterest? And to my utter amazement, half the audience said Pinterest. So some tips about Pinterest. First of all, don't pin personal stuff, don't pin your personal photos. It's unlikely that your personal photos are good enough to compare with most of the professional stuff that's posted on Pinterest. Now, Instagram is a different story. Instagram is about your slice of life, but Pinterest, it's sheerly about beauty. And most of those photos are taken by professional photographers. Now if you're Jay Leno and you own 200 vintage cars, hallelujah. If you're Trey Ratcliff and you have these ultimate pictures of New Zealand, hallelujah. But for the rest of us, I think you stick with finding other people's content and social content that is not originated by you. Speaking of the concept of original, there are many people who spend most of their time on Pinterest repinning other pins, and I think you should back off a little from that and find the source, find that original picture of the food, find that original picture of the car or the gizmo that you want to pin on Pinterest, and be the first generation pinner. Don't always be repinning stuff. Next tip on Pinterest is to use very few or no hashtags. Unlike Instagram where hashtags are open season, Pinterest there seems to be this bias against a lot of hashtags. I think it's because people on Pinterest are so sensitive and so aware to the aesthetics of the pins that they don't want a bunch of hashtags in the comments and in the descriptive area that sort of makes it look ugly. So take it easy on hashtags in Pinterest. Another tip, you obviously have a Pinterest account and you control the position of the boards on your account. I think you should rotate that every once in a while. Don't always keep the same board at the top. You want to show people a diversity of interests. You want to show them more eye candy. Move those things around. Next thing is keep your cover photos fresh. Because there's such a desire for beauty on Pinterest, you need to rotate that. Keep it fresh, keep it looking new, take new things and add new pictures for that and constantly be showing that you're sort of on the inside of Pinterest. You understand that, man, that beauty counts on Pinterest. And those are my tips for Pinterest.
