- As a consultant, I don't have any official power. I can say all day long, "I think you guys really need to have these two sit down "and work on their individual relationship "before we can sit down and work "on the team in general. But nobody has to listen to me. That's not to say that I don't have power in those situations, though. There are two types of personal power that I rely on and you, too, can build to manage your teams more effectively. I will identify each of these for you and show you how you can build them for yourself. The majority of my power, when making recommendations as a consultant, comes from my clients knowing I'm an expert in organizational and team communication. So when I recommend that the company hold off on a new initiative until the teams involved are functioning at a higher level, they generally go along with my suggestion. This is expert power.
