- You can't hold it in your hand. You can't take a picture of it, and you definitely can't sell it for a profit, but happiness still holds an abundance of value. Seriously, those positive emotions can pack a huge punch. I think you know that already, but let's talk through five specific benefits so we're on the same page. First up, in such a competitive market harnessing employee innovation has never been more imperative in gaining an advantage, and happiness can actually result in more creative thinking and more efficient decision making. This is called "broaden-and-build," a term coined by researched Barbara Fredrickson. Dr. Fredrickson determined through her research that positive emotions, like happiness, actually broaden our awareness and encourage exploration. In other words, happiness opens our minds and gives us the courage to try new things.
