- In South Africa, after 50 years of apartheid finally ended, a policy of ruthless, often brutal discrimination by whites against blacks, and after 27 years of being imprisoned for his stance against apartheid, Nelson Mandela, who was black, ran for president against the current leader, F.W. de Klerk, who was white. In their first presidential debate, widely broadcast, de Klerk clearly won in terms of clarity about the issues, relevant facts at hand, and substantive points made. Mandela handily lost the debate in a way as publicly visible as possible. Now, I'd like you to pause and project yourself into that moment. You just endured what could be a humiliating public defeat.
