- If you're looking for a rewarding career, that will challenge you, then a job as a licensed practical or licensed vocational nurse may be for you. While LPMs and LVNs can work in a doctor's office. Most choose to work where their direct patient skills can stay up to date, in hospitals or skilled nursing facilities, where the day can sometimes be a race. It begins with rounds and counting narcotics. You'll meet with the night shift for an update on the condition of the patients or residents, to review new meds and treatments, and to discuss new admissions. As you might imagine, a hospital will be different from a skilled nursing facility. There are fewer patients, but their conditions are more serious and there are many more admissions and discharges in hospitals as the patient's stays are a lot shorter.
