Overview of the dental assistant role

- If you like a versatile work day that goes by quickly and gives you the opportunity to develop relationships with your patients, then working as a dental assistant may be for you.. As a dental assistant, you'll start your day with a team meeting, when the office manager reviews the schedule for the day. After the meeting, you'll put together specific trays for each scheduled patient. For example, if a patient is having a root canal, you put all of the instruments, medications, and supplies on a tray, and you do that for all that day's appointments. Then you'll prep the exam rooms. You'll clean them, fill water bottles, flush the lines, and set out the trays for the first patients. After your first patient has signed all consent and procedure forms, you'll walk them back to the chair. You'll get an updated health history, including new medications and any other changes.
