Organizational risk factors

- Workplace bullying and harassment don't happen in a vacuum. They happen in the context of your organization. So when there's bullying or harassment, it's because the organization made space for them. I'm talking about organizational risk factors, in other words, researchers who study negative work environments have identified factors that would make space for negative behavior. For harassment, risk factors include inequity of pay, previous perpetrators not being disciplined, social networks that exclude certain groups, lack of trust in reporting to HR and managers, and more. If one or more of these risk factors are present, harassment is more likely. I think this is interesting because many companies focus harassment prevention efforts on training programs, but if these risk factors exist, they aren't preventing harassment at all.
