- When a new person is hired, many times companies simply use the sink or swim approach. They just throw the person in and let them start trying to do the job. There's very little time spent filling out forms or going to orientations. The sink or swim method has clear pros and cons. On the pro side, people begin adding to your team's productivity immediately, and there's no loss of learning between a classroom setting and the real job setting. On the con side, new employees often experience higher stress, less confidence, and a feeling of not being supported correctly. The preferred method of bringing in a new employee is called onboarding. When done correctly, onboarding helps the employee navigate through all of the paperwork associated with starting a new job, helps them learn about their role, their team, and the overall organization, and supports strong productivity and retention.
