Negotiation is for home and work

- In this first section of the course, I want to cover the idea that if in doubt, you should always negotiate. It's very easy to avoid negotiating for various reasons which I'll come to later. But you really mustn't because they can often be quite large amounts of money at stake, both at home and at work. And it's absolutely the same process in both of those places. So at home you might be negotiating over big things like houses and cars that can be thousands of pounds at stake. So you'd be mad to be one of those people who say, oh, yes I negotiate at work all the time, but I never do it at home cause I'm kind of embarrassed. Don't be embarrassed, it's your money. And similarly at work, you could be negotiating over really quite large amounts of money. But also you're negotiating over other things like your time. So don't be one of those people who say, oh yes, I negotiate at home because it's my own money but at work, I don't really care. Because at work, although it doesn't seem like your money, it effectively is. If you can make the company a little bit more successful, then that will reflect in hopefully your pay but at least in your job security. So do both, use the skills that you learn in one place in the other place. And use the stuff I'm going to teach you in both places absolutely. And a final thought about this, is whether you're negotiating at home or at work, don't be one of those people who's really pushy and always demanding a bit more and a bit more. Use it selectively, use it carefully, use it in the right places. And always be nice about the way you do it. So underneath, you're tough and steely and you've got your objectives, but on the surface you could still be a nice person.
