- Multitasking. Most organizations encourage this behavior in their developers. That's why on job sites you'll often see the ability to multitask near the top of the list. But multitasking comes at a heavy price. People can't really work on many tasks divided into even slices. A person's not like a pizza. If you take two slices of time, then you'll have six slices left. No one really works that way. Think about the last time you worked on something important. Sometimes it takes a long time to get started. Then you'll gain momentum, then someone knocks on your door or there's a beep from your smartphone, you'll see an email with a flashing exclamation point. You switch off what you were doing and focus on this new task. Then you have to switch back and restart what you were doing. This is commonly called context switching.
