Motivating people during change projects
- Motivating people during change is a challenge and there are many theories around what motivates people. And I've covered some of these in my Change Management for Projects course. In this course, I'd like to address Daniel Pink's theory which state that business leaders should be using an approach to motivation based on self determination. He suggests that people have an innate drive to be autonomous, self determined, and connected to one another which he states is the need for autonomy, mastery, and purpose. Autonomy means that people like to be self directed and have a degree of freedom to decide aspects of their work like the time, technique, team, and tasks. They are free to do their work whenever they want to. The most important thing is to focus on the output, not how it's done. Then there's mastery. Suggesting that people like to do things well and get better at doing things they value. Pink describes these as…
