Misaligning gaming elements

- Gamification is about taking the elements of games and matching those elements to the tasks that sales professionals need to perform as a method of motivation and reinforcement. Unfortunately, if the wrong game elements are matched with the wrong tasks, the results can be a disaster. For example, if thoughtfully entering information into a CRM system about a meeting with a customer is desirable, then giving incentives such as points for entering notes as quickly as possible defeats the purpose of thoughtful information. One mistake often made is that organizations misalign the game elements like time or progression with the task or behaviors they want to reinforce among the sales force. This misalignment can actually be demotivating and reduce the effectiveness of the gamification effort. Another often misused gamification element is competition.
