Measuring candidates before the hire
- As part of a recent hiring program, I asked 150 software development leaders to describe what their best new hires did differently after six to 12 months on the job. This is the list they came up with. They consistently exceed expectations. They get things done on time without making excuses. They're great problem solvers. They fit with the culture, the team, and the hiring manager. They are highly motivated to do the work that needs to be done. To better assess these factors during the interview, I suggest it might make sense to define the performance expectations ahead of time. Then use the interview to determine if the person has done anything similar. They all agreed.
