Measure phase: Data collection planning
- Let's assume I decide to compete for the 100 meter sprint events for the Olympics. What is the first thing I should do? Well, I should probably see what my current performance is for the 100 meter sprint. Perhaps I should ask, what is my current state of fitness? Am I in good health? And how much I need to improve to even qualify for the Olympics? These are very good questions. I can't possibly train for the Olympics if I have no idea where I stand today. Similarly, that's what you need to do in a Lean Six Sigma project. You have to ask the right questions and the best way to do that is with a data collection plan. Let's discuss how to plan for data collection during the measure phase. Collecting data is not free or cheap. Collecting data requires time, effort and resources. All too often, project teams who do not plan for data collection spend too much during the measure phase, going in circles, hunting for data, collecting and measuring everything in sight. It's a waste. To make…
