- We don't all look at work the same way. In his book Why We Work, Barry Schwartz summarizes three ways we can relate to work. Work as a job, work as a career, and work as a calling. Those who view work as a job mainly see it as a paycheck. They don't receive any kind of reward or fulfillment beyond salary and benefits. Those who view work as a career want to get better at what they do and maybe take on new responsibilities and move up the organization. As you can guess, they have higher levels of motivation. Now those who view work as a calling understand how the work they do makes a positive difference for others. Their work makes them happy because they understand its importance and they feel like they're doing the right thing. These are not hard and fast categories.
